Barnyard Grass, also known as Cockspur Grass (Echinochloa Crus-galli) is an annual grass in the True-grass Family (Poaceae). It’s native to Asia. Blooms Jul-Sep and grows 1-4.5 ft. It’s a common weedy grass in wetlands, swamps, wet prairies and wet meadows. Tolerates wet to dry soils and partial shade to full sun exposure.
Barnyard Grass is a common problem in Wetland and Wet Prairie restoration. It moves in with yearly floods and takes over bare soil when water goes down. It’s also known to replace dead Reed Canary Grass after herbicide applications. Barnyard Grass is a common weed in Right-of-ways, cropland and gardens; anywhere there is bare soil.
