Common Vetch, also known as Garden Vetch or just Vetch (Vicia Sativa) is an annual viney forb in the Pea Family (Fabaceae). It’s native to Eurasia. Blooms Apr-Aug and grows climbing 1-4 ft. It’s a common weed in prairies, meadows, savannas, forest edges, fields, gardens and roadsides. Tolerates moist to dry soils and partial to full sun exposure.
Like many plants in the Pea Family, Common Vetch can fix nitrogen. It’s known to be edible and part of human diet in past generations.
